The pneumonia vaccine is recommended for all adults 65 years and older. It’s also recommended for adults 18 to 65 with certain chronic (ongoing) conditions or immune system problems.
Getting the pneumonia vaccine is the best way to lower your risk of getting sick with pneumonia. Pneumonia typically affects the lungs. Older adults who get pneumonia are at high risk for serious illness and death.
The number of shots you need depends on if and when you’ve gotten a pneumonia vaccine in the past. (If you’re not sure, reach out to us and we’ll help you sort it out.)
You can get it any time of year.
The pneumonia vaccine is widely available (you don’t even need a prescription or provider’s order). Your best bet is to get it at a pharmacy near you.
Most people have no side effects. Some people have a sore arm where the shot was given or a headache, or they feel tired or achy. Any side effects are usually mild and don't last long, especially when compared to symptoms of pneumonia.
